yes, it is the usual deaf-conference people who contributed in it with
lots of difficult words, but some stuff is interesting for people who
are more theoretically interested in media arts, new scientific
approaches and new architecture...
another thing is that V2 lab got its funding refused by the city, there
is a big row going on; then also steim got in trouble with the
subsidies same thing, which seems to point to a general dutch policy
change, giving preference to the more public and semi-commercial
institutions, above the longtime and more behind the curtains working
laboratory-style organizations... (dj vj easy stuff and poshy big or
popular festival style organisations win the most here) of course in
the framework of media art in europa, this is devastating for most of
the experimentally oriented and non-commercial/not-for-profit
organizations are having a harder time over the last years to survive!
and finally more sad news, yesterday got the news michel waisvisz died
in amsterdam, director of steim, one of the places that supported
uncountable experimental musicians, composers and media artists...
michel himself invented the crazy cracklebox and worked for more than
15 years developing a complex haptic interface for performing called
"the hands"... for me it is rather emotional because 15 years ago I got
to know him, and after working at steim for a couple of years (we
basically made 2 cd's there under the band name "young farmers claim
future") we remained friends, meeting once in a while in amsterdam
passing through steim, or elsewhere when we were on the same festivals
or conferences... he is one of the persons that influenced many people,
probably half of the current artists in the media arts passed through
steim to realize some technological or conceptual thing, which I am
proud to admit here too ...

Michel Waisvisz died peacefully in his home on Wednesday June 18 after
fighting the mean cells in his body for the last eight months.
He was born on the 8th of July 1949 and lead STEIM as Director for 27
years.
He left us on a day when artists and friends from around the world
gathered
downstairs to perform for a full-house season-closing concert.
Michel was a musician, visionary and occasional gardener - touched by
sound
and forever happy to be surprised. He was the source of an enormous
surge of
energy that continues to flow through STEIM into the world.
We will miss his touch, crackle, inspiration and constant improvisation
of
the now.
You can leave condolances at http://www.steim.org/michel/.
